As travel trends evolve, modern tourists are gravitating towards accommodation options that offer unique, personal experiences with a closer connection to local culture.
In destinations like the Seychelles, smaller establishments such as boutique hotels, guesthouses, and self-catering units provide distinct advantages that align with these preferences.
Below, we explore the key benefits of choosing small accommodation options, highlighting their value in the changing tourism landscape.
Personalised Service
One of the standout features of small accommodation establishments is the personalised level of service they offer. With fewer guests to cater for, smaller hotels and guesthouses can focus on providing bespoke experiences to their clientele.
This intimate setting allows staff to remember individual preferences such as dietary requirements and room amenities which ensures a customised and attentive service. This personal touch helps to kindle a connection between guests and their hosts, which can be particularly valuable in a destination like the Seychelles, where the charm of local culture is a central draw for many visitors.
According to industry research, 74% of travellers now prioritise personalised service when selecting an accommodation.
Cost Effective Stays
Small accommodation establishments often represent a more economical option for travellers without compromising on quality.
Boutique hotels and self-catering units typically offer lower nightly rates than large resorts, making them an attractive choice for budget conscious travellers or those planning extended stays.
Additionally, the ability to prepare meals in self-catering units can further reduce travel costs, especially for families or groups. According to travel guides, visitors can save significantly by choosing small establishments, with estimated savings of 20-40% compared to larger resorts.
This makes small accommodations a practical yet comfortable choice for visitors seeking both affordability and an authentic experience.
Cultural Immersion
Opting for small scale accommodations can enhance a traveller’s cultural experience.
Many smaller establishments are embedded within local communities, offering a more authentic glimpse into the everyday life of Seychellois culture.
Staying in a guesthouse, boutique hotel or a self-catering unit often brings opportunities to engage directly with locals and owners of the accommodation establishments by way of home cooked meals, local excursions, or insider tips on lesser known attractions.
The ability to immerse oneself in the culture while enjoying the island’s natural beauty is a key appeal for numerous visitors of the Seychelles.
Environmental Sustainability
Sustainability is an increasingly important consideration for many travellers, and smaller accommodation providers in the Seychelles are well positioned to meet this demand.
Boutique hotels, guesthouses and self-catering units often have a smaller environmental footprint than those of their larger counterparts, due to their size and resource consumption.
Many of these establishments are implementing eco friendly practices, such as water conservation systems, solar power, and waste reduction initiatives.
This not only helps protect Seychelles’ delicate ecosystems but also aligns with the growing trend of responsible tourism, both global and domestic.
Privacy and Tranquillity
For those seeking peace and quiet, small accommodation options offer a distinct advantage.
Guesthouses, self-catering units and boutique hotels typically provide a more tranquil and private environment.
Travellers looking for a romantic retreat or a quiet getaway can receive both with small accommodations as they offer guests the opportunity to relax and enjoy the beauty of the Seychelles in a serene setting.
Privacy and calm are often cited as major factors by travellers choosing smaller establishments, particularly when compared to the busier atmospheres of larger hotels.
SSHEA
Small accommodation establishments in Seychelles offer a host of benefits, from personalised service and cost savings to cultural immersion and environmental sustainability.
For travellers seeking a more intimate, authentic experience, these smaller hotels, guesthouses, and self-catering units provide the perfect balance of comfort, charm, and connection to the local environment.
In line with this ethos and to ensure these small accommodations thrive, the Seychelles Small Hotels and Establishments Association (SSHEA) was formed.

Our Partnership with SSHEA
As part of this movement, HeySey is proud to partner with SSHEA to give small accommodation establishments the platform they deserve. Through this collaboration, HeySey aims to ensure that visitors to the Seychelles are not only aware of these unique, locally run establishments but are also motivated to choose them as their preferred accommodation option.
